Faith: A Devotional

Thought For Today

Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith will it be done to you.” (Matthew 9:29 NIV)

Scripture Reading

He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20 NIV)

Story

As a child I loved to plant flowers and dig holes. One day, I decided it would be nice to plant lollipops. So I took my bag of lollipops and planted them in neat rows. I watered the lollipops, and I waited and waited, but no lollipops grew. Now, I was just a child and had faith this could happen. If the lollipops had been able to grow because of faith, then I would have had a good crop of lollipops.

Another time I planted flower seeds. One of them was a small sunflower seed. I carefully dug holes and planted the seeds in rows. Each day I would check to see if any of the seeds had sprouted. I carefully watered the seeds and kept the weeds pulled. Slowly, the seeds sprouted and flowers grew. One of them was a beautiful, tall sunflower. I continued caring for the flowers until the Lord sent the first frost and they returned to the ground.

As I grew older, I realized that lollipops don’t grow. They are made. I had faith that the lollipops would grow, but I had put my faith in something that didn’t make sense. Flowers do grow from seeds. It made sense to believe that I would have flowers if I planted, watered, and cared for the seeds. But I had to believe that they were beginning to grow, even though I couldn’t see them under the ground.

Just as it takes faith to believe that seeds will grow, it takes faith to believe in Jesus and ask Him into our hearts. Believing in Jesus makes sense, because He is real, and He is God. He loves every one of us, and He proved His love by coming to earth to die on the cross for our sins. If a person has faith as small as a tiny seed, great miracles can happen, and the greatest miracle of all is having eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Do you have that kind of faith? Have you asked Jesus into your heart? If you ask Him to forgive your sins and come into your heart, then He will, and He’ll be your very best friend forever.

Prayer

Dear Jesus, please give me faith to believe in You all the time, even though I can’t see You. Please forgive me for everything I’ve done wrong and help me to live for You every day. In Your name I pray. Amen.
